What is Vedic Astrology?

Vedic Astrology also called Eastern Astrology or by its Indian Name Jyotish. Jyotish means the science of the light. Vedic Astrology is the science of the light, it is an ancient Astrology dating back to the Vedic times over 5,500 years ago. Why is Vedic Astrology called the Science of the light? All life comes from the light of the Sun where all the light of our solar system originates. When you look up at Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn at night your seeing the Sun’s light being reflected off the planet to use here on Earth.

Vedic Astrology, just like in Astronomy or when you’re observing planets through a telescope you’re using the actual position of the planet in the sky. Western astrology places the planets 23 degrees from their actual position in the sky. Western Astrology is an entirely different subject than Vedic Astrology. Vedic Astrology uses only the planets you can see with your eyes in the night sky.  This is because Uranus and Neptune are too far away and move too slowly through signs to any effect on one persons life. However Uranus, Neptune, and the minor planet Pluto are used for generational effects, mundane Vedic Astrology, and in the charts of nations. The Nodes in Vedic Astrology are Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are only seen twice a year during Eclipses.

Holistic Approach to Vedic Astrology

When people get an astrology reading, they usually are going through tough times, have troubles at work or in their careers, have challenging relationships, feel depressed, or just have a very difficult time in general. Often, they turn to Vedic astrologers whose readings sometimes can be very dark and even cryptic. Sometimes, astrologers use remedies that require clients to wear expensive stones and jewelry or even have clients do rituals or say long Mantras in a language from a culture that is completely foreign to their own. Even I fell victim to this and had a reading that was more harmful than helpful.

We all go through difficult stages in life, over the past decade I went through many. If you’re going through dark times and facing many challenges. There is holistic dealing with these difficulties. Though a discovery session I can begin to unlock your true potential so you can bring the blessing of hope into your life and be more confident even in when difficulties arise.

The Vedic Astrology Chart

There are two charts used in Vedic Astrology.

The chart above is the North Indian Chart. This is a holistic chart of the sky. The big box in the middle of the chart represents our location on Earth at the time of our birth. The Ascendant marks the constellation rising in the Eastern sky at the time of our birth. When we have an accurate birth time, we know where each house is located and which planet rules each home in the Astrology chart. The Ascendant is the first house, and the second house is clockwise from the first house. In this chart the first house is the sign of Cancer, there are no planets in the first house. The second house is Leo. There are four planets in Leo. The South Indian also shows the planetary energy that is flowing through the chakras of the body.

The North Indian Chart

This is the North Indian Chart. The North Indian chart is a house chart. The First house is always the diamond on the top it has a number 4. The second house is the triangle on the top right with a number 5. The 12th house is the triangle on the top left with a number 3. The main advantage in using this chart is when your calculating the Yogas in a person chart.

As you can see the lower part of each house, there is a number 1, 2, 3, 4…. The number shows the placements of the constellations in the sky. Number 1 is Aries, Number 2 is Taurus, Number 3 is Gemini, Number 4 is Cancer, Number 5 is Leo, Number 6 is Virgo, Number 7 is Libra, Number 8 is Scorpio, Number 9 is Sagittarius, Number 10 is Capricorn, Number 11 is Aquarius, and Number 12 is Pisces.

I use both charts because the South Indian shows the correct planetary positions, house rulerships, and energy in the charts. I use the North Indian Chart to calculate the Yogas.

Finding the planets in the Vedic Charts. Many Astrologers in Vedic Astrology use the Greek symbols for the planets and refer to the constellations as signs in the chart. I stay away from the Greek symbols altogether, and I don’t refer to the constellations as signs because in Vedic Astrology, we are using the planets in their actual positions in the constellations in the sky. That’s why you will never hear me refer to the planets in signs, I only refer to them in constellations.

The planets in Vedic Astrology. Su = Sun, Mo = Moon. Ma = Mars, Me = Mercury, Ju = Jupiter, Ve = Venus, Sa = Saturn, Ra = Rahu, Ke = Ketu. In the chart above, you will see an R after some of the planets. Ex. JuR, SaR, MaR, the R refers to planets being Retrograde in the chart. There is also another letter you will often see in an Astrology Cart, a C after a planet. MaC or JuC. The C means the planet is combust.

House Lords

House Lords are a very important concept in Vedic Astrology. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn rule two houses. One house is feminine in nature and one is masculine in nature. The Sun is the origin of all Masculine energy and Sun energy in the form of light created all life this is why Masculine energy is externalized and the Sun only rules on constellation and that is the constellation of Leo. The Moon is the origin of all feminine energy because the moon’s light is a reflection of the Sun. light. Feminine energy is energy that needs to be reflected upon or internalized within ourselves. The Moon also only rules on constellation and that is Cancer.

Mars’s masculine ruled constellation is Aries, and Mars’s feminine ruled constellation is Scorpio. Mercury’s masculine ruled constellation is Gemini and Mercury’s ruled feminine constellation is Virgo. Jupiter’s masculine ruled constellation is Sagittarius and Jupiter’s feminine ruled constellation is Pisces. Venus’s Masculine ruled constellation is Libra, and Venus’s feminine ruled constellation is Taurus. Saturn’s Masculine ruled constellation is Aquarius and Saturn’s feminine ruled constellation is Capricorn.

For every ascendant all planets ruled different houses. Here is comparing an Aries Ascendant and a Cancer Ascendant.

For an Aries Ascendant Mars Rules the 1st house (Aries) and the 8th House (Scropio). Venus Rules the 2nd house (Taurus) and the 7th House (Libra) Mercury rules the 3rd house (Gemini) and the 6th House (Virgo) Moon rules the 4th house (Cancer) Sun rules the 5th house (Leo) Jupiter rules the 9th house (Sagittarius) and the 12th house (Pisces) Saturn rules the 10th house (Capricorn) and the 11th house (Aquarius).

For a Cancer Ascendant The Moon rules the 1st house (Cancer) The Sun rules the 2nd House (Leo) Mercury rules the 3rd house (Virgo) and the 12th House (Gemini). Venus rules the 4th House (Libra) and the 11th house (Taurus). Mars rules the 5th house (Scorpio) and the 10th house (Aries) Jupiter rules the 6th house (Sagittarius) and the 9th house (Pisces) Saturn rules the 7th house (Capricorn) and the 8th house (Aquarius).
